Educators support, mentor or encourage other educators and those preparing to enter the profession. Educators contribute their expertise to activities offered by their schools, districts, professional organizations, post-secondary institutions or contribute in other ways.
Evidence 1: Inclusive Education Website (EdExpo)
The first piece of evidence that I have chosen for TRB Standard 8 is a website that my EdExpo partner and I developed for our presentation on Inclusive Education. The EdExpo is a project that we were assigned as student teachers in the Elementary Post-Baccalaureate Education program at Vancouver Island University. We picked a topic in education that we found appealing and wanted to further our understanding in, then found a partner or group to work with, and researched our subject so that we could either present our findings in a presentation or station format. My partner and I chose the following topic: Inclusive Education - Meeting the Needs of Students with Special Needs. We chose this topic due to our previous and current experience of working with students with special needs and behavioural challenges. We were motivated to learn more about how to support these learners in the classroom, and hopefully provide information for our colleagues whom are also interested in being more informed on this important topic. The website we designed highlights key areas of our presentation, and provides the viewers of the site with valuable resources and information on how to meet the needs of students with special needs.
This standard highlights the important matter that, "Educators support, mentor or encourage other educators and those preparing to enter the profession." What I have learned and experienced through creating this resource, is how important it is to share our knowledge and expertise with our colleagues. Education is always growing and it can be challenging to keep up with; therefore, it is vital that educators work together to enable each other to be more informed in certain subject areas, or topics within education. By sharing this new resource that my EdExpo partner and I created, I have experienced the joy and feeling of accomplishment by providing my personal knowledge and experience through working with children with special needs.
This piece of evidence has been created to help educate and support teachers in enhancing their understanding to meet the needs of students with special needs. This website will act as a resource for educators to use so that they can make accommodations to their teaching styles in order to support the diverse learners that a classroom consists of.
A strength of this first piece of evidence is how organized and easy to use our website is. It is filled with information that will support teachers in facilitating a better learning environment for students with special needs. This website on inclusive education represents my commitment to this standard, as my partner and I have contributed our expertise in this area which will act as a resource for teachers to use. This is the first of many ways I hope to contribute to the teaching profession.
As I have previously mentioned, I believe that TRB Standard 8 is extremely important for educators to hold true as we progress through the profession. Teaching is focused on collaboration and teamwork in order to not only better our students as learners, but our colleagues as well. As stated in this standard, "Educators contribute their expertise to activities offered by their schools, districts, professional organizations, post-secondary institutions or contribute in other ways." Meaning that it is vital for educators to contribute their expertise, and continue to do so as we are continuously developing and learning in this field. We are only enhancing our experiences as educators by doing so.
Part of my teaching philosophy involves incorporating leadership in my classroom, as well as with my colleagues. By contributing to the profession and mentoring other teachers already in the field, or soon to enter, we are acting as leaders. I will hold this standard true throughout my career by being a leader for my colleagues, and offering my knowledge or expertise as I continue teaching and growing. By being devoted to holding this standard true, I believe that I will remain consistently motivated to enhance my own learning and skills as a teacher; allowing me to further contribute to this profession.

Evidence 2: Inclusive Education Presentation (EdExpo)
The second piece of evidence that I have chosen for TRB Standard 8 is a PowerPoint presentation that my EdExpo partner and I created. This PowerPoint was used for our presentation on the topic of: Inclusive Education: Meeting the Needs of Students with Special Needs. We presented our findings to 28 attendees in the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Education program that chose to view our presentation. Our PowerPoint includes information on the research we did to prep for the EdExpo, as well as hands-on activities that led to great, interactive discussions within our presentation.
Through creating this piece of evidence and using it in our presentation, I learned how important it is that "Educators support, mentor or encourage other educators and those preparing to enter the profession." My EdExpo partner and I have previous experience of working with students with special needs outside of the classroom. This was a key aspect that motivated us to lead a presentation on the topic of inclusive education; so that we could share our knowledge and experience with our peers to educate them on an important topic in education. We both experienced the importance of sharing knowledge with our peers, in order to better others' understanding on how to successfully meet the needs of students with special needs.
This piece of evidence relates to creating a positive learning environment for students with special needs. We created this PowerPoint and presentation in order to provide insight and first-hand knowledge for our peers that are interested in learning how to create inclusion in their classrooms.
Our PowerPoint provided research and hands-on activities for the attendees of our presentation. The participants were able to see and feel firsthand what it is like to be excluded, segregated, integrated, and included in a classroom. This process allowed the attendees of our presentation to gain an understanding of what students with special needs might be going through in the class - which also led to great discussion. This was a significant strength of this evidence piece, as our participants were able to not only learn more about creating inclusion in their classroom, but also what it feels like to be left out or excluded from certain classroom activities.
Contributing to the profession is an extremely vital aspect that comes with being a teacher. When we as educators contain special skills or knowledge in certain subject areas, I believe that it is our duty to share this knowledge with our peers, in order to benefit our students' learning experiences. By collaborating with our peers and colleagues, we are only enhancing the education field; which forces me to believe that holding this standard true is incredibly important as we progress throughout our careers.
As I continue to teach and grow as a professional in the education field, I will hold this standard true by offering my knowledge and expertise to my colleagues in order to enhance their abilities as teachers. Through being devoted to this cause, I believe that I will remain consistently motivated to enhance my own learning and skills as a teacher; allowing me to further contribute to the profession.
